BYD’s 2nd Generation Technology of Energy Storage Upgrades the Nuclear Power Station in China.

On August 30th, 2012, BYD once again won the bidding of a nuclear power station’s high power capacity battery energy storage project from CGNPC（ China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp）. It’s reported that the project is a National energy application technology research and engineering demonstration project with a total capacity of 2.5MW/3.5MWh. The energy storage station will work as emergency electric power source to protect the human and the station from being damaged, when the nuclear power station is out of electric power supply caused by extreme accidents.
“Nuclear safety” is the supreme requirement for nuclear power industry, it means the industry always have strict standards for product reliability and maturity. Every single part, from reactor to screw, has life-or-death consequences. So all the products not only need to have excellent quality mature and stable technology, but also can ensure absolutely safety and reliability even in harsh conditions, such as earthquake, tsunami, fire, and radioactive substances. BYD’s winning the bidding in the tender competition means the skill level and maturity of BYD energy storage station technology have gained a widely industrial recognition and made a solid step.
The power failure is the biggest threat of a nuclear power plant, when the station suffered extreme circumstances, and eventually leading to blackouts, the reactor also will automatically shut down, at same time EPS start and keeping cooling system to work and until discharge heat in time. In Japan’s “311” Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, because of the power failure, three reactor cooling systems stopped running and thousands of people were under a mandatory evacuation, giving a
baleful influence in the global nuclear power industry development. From the generation of facility, the Fukushima nuclear power plant is the second generation facility, the safety system was adopt “active” system design and it need external electric power supply to drive the cooling system to water cooling. BYD’s second generation energy storage station can provides a much reliable “passive” emergency power for the second generation nuclear power units. Even in the extreme conditions of losing the external power, the auto-start energy storage system can provides the electric power to keep the cooling system working, becoming the finally security defense line. With the installation of BYD energy storage station, the security level of the second generation nuclear power units can be increased to the level of the three generation. The Fukushima tragedy could be avoided if BYD’s energy storage station was used in Fukushima nuclear power plant.
